Recent Job – Slow NBN on NBN50 Plan, Mallaig rise, Berwick
A client on Mallaig Rise, Berwick contacted Computer Technicians because their NBN connection was running at around 4 to 5Mbps on an NBN50 plan. They’d called their ISP twice and been told the line was fine both times.
We visited and connected directly to the NBN connection point to run independent line tests, bypassing the existing modem. The raw line signal was clean. The problem was on the client’s side.
We inspected the RJ11 cable running from the NBN connection point to the modem. It was a flat ribbon telephone extension cable, not the correct solid core cable for a VDSL connection. It also had a junction block join halfway along where someone had extended it at some point. Every join and every metre of ribbon cable was degrading the DSL signal before it even reached the modem.
We also checked the modem. It was the original Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2 supplied when the connection was first activated, now over 6 years old.
We replaced the ribbon cable with a single uninterrupted run of solid core Cat3 telephone cable and replaced the Telstra modem with a TP-Link VR2100.
We ran a speed test immediately after – 54 Mbps download.
The client had been paying for 50Mbps and getting 5Mbps for years.
