Acer Aspire Overheating - Hallam Client

A client on Hallam Road, Hallam contacted Computer Technicians because their Acer Aspire laptop had become almost unusable as it was overheating. The performance would drop dramatically after 15 minutes or so. The PC was also running extremely hot. The client also mentioned that general Windows use had slowed significantly and the 256GB SSD was almost full.

Our technician ran HWMonitor to track CPU and GPU temperatures. In just under 8 minutes of running a benchmark the CPU was hitting 97 degrees Celsius and the GPU was peaking at 91 degrees.

We cleaned all dust and debris from both fan assemblies and applied fresh Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut compound to both.

We chose Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut over standard Artic Silver 5 because Kryonaut’s has a thermal conductivity rating of 12.5 W/mK and it outperforms Arctic Silver 5 at 8.7 W/mK.

After reassembly we ran the same benchmark. CPU temperatures peaked at 74 degrees and GPU at 68 degrees.

We installed a WD Black SN770 1TB NVMe SSD into the available second M.2 slot on the Acer Aspire motherboard.

We chose the WD Black SN770 for the secondary gaming drive specifically because of its sustained sequential read and write performance profile.

We migrated the client’s game library from the original drive to the new WD Black, leaving Windows and installed software on the original drive and giving the game library a full 1TB of dedicated fast storage. Post-installation Windows use was noticeably more responsive throughout without any throttling.
