Recent Job Done – Desktop & iPhone backup in Mount Waverley
We had a client on Stephenons road contact us for a backup solution: for the husband’s iPhone and their Windows desktop which hadn’t been backed up for years – it was an old computer which was on its last leg. They had recently bought a Seagate 2TB backup plus portable drive for this purpose.
We started off with the desktop. The computer was slow – had a dying hard drive so installing any software would have taken ages. For this job we just used the Windows Backup tool to configure a scheduled backup of the Documents, Desktop, Pictures and Videos to the backup drive. It is currently set to automatically backup every night at midnight when the drive is plugged in and idle. The first backup was run manually to make sure it was completed without errors. 52GB backed up in about 25 minutes (yes, slow owing to the dying internal hard drive)
The iPhone was backed up with iTunes, and we did this directly to Seagate rather than to the default C: drive. Obviously, by default iTunes saves iPhone backups to the C: drive which fills up fast on smaller drives.
We used a symbolic link to redirect the iTunes backup folder from the C: to the Seagate drive. We ran the first backup, confirmed it was completed and was readable on the external drive.
We ran an encrypted backup which stores health data, saved passwords and account credentials that unencrypted backup doesn’t include. It’s worth doing, especially for a phone that’s constantly being used for banking, emails etc.
We then enabled iCloud backup on the iPhone as a second backup. iCloud backup runs automatically when the phone is on charge and connected to Wi-Fi. The first iCloud backup was completed, and we confirmed the right size and date in the Settings >Apple ID>iCloud>iCloud Backup section.
We were then asked to specifically extract all the photos into another drive that their daughter. This was done using a software called iMazing. iMazing was able to detect their iTunes backup automatically and then we were able to extract all the Photos, videos, Live photos etc. from the iTunes backup into another folder on another HDD.
In all, we spent about 3 hours at the client’s place. Client was happy with the work done, the photos extracted and our pricing for the time we spent
.
P.S: The client didn’t want to fix/change their dying HDD on their machine as they didn’t use the machine as much and already have a laptop that they normally use.
Thanks Ron and Laura!
