Recent Job – Dell Inspiron 15 Freezing & SSD Replacement, Grices Road, Clyde

A client on Grices Road contacted us after her Dell Inspiron 15 3000 kept freezing up randomly throughout the day. Sometimes it would lock up within minutes of booting, other times it would run for an hour before grinding to a halt. She had already tried a Windows reset herself which made no difference at all.

Our technician visited the same day and ran a full diagnostic. The first thing we checked was Event Viewer, which is where Windows logs hardware and software errors in the background that most users never see. Sure enough, Event Viewer was showing repeated hardware controller errors tied directly to the storage device, specifically a series of disk controller timeout events that pointed clearly toward a failing SSD rather than a software issue. This is a common pattern with SSDs that are beginning to fail. The drive was still technically functional which is why the Windows reset had appeared to complete successfully, but it was throwing errors under sustained read and write activity which caused the system to stall and freeze while waiting for the storage controller to respond.

At that point the diagnosis was straightforward. The SSD needed replacing before it failed completely. We imaged the existing drive immediately to preserve all the client’s data while the drive was still readable. We replaced the original drive with a Samsung BM9C1 512GB NvME SSD. We chose the Samsung BM9C1 over alternatives like the WD Blue or Kingstonfor a specific reason. The Kingston has a weaker track record for sustained reliability in budget laptops that run warm, and the Dell Inspiron 15 3000 series is known to run on the warmer side under normal use. The Samsung BM9C1 has a more robust controller that handles thermal fluctuations better, and it carries a three year warranty which gave the client peace of mind. We migrated all her data across to the new drive, did a clean Windows 11 install and ran the laptop through a full stress test before handing it back. Not a single freeze since. Client was relieved to have a stable machine again without having to spend money on a replacement laptop.
