Skye is a semi-rural suburb sitting between Frankston and Carrum Downs on the edge of the Mornington Peninsula, and the mix of established residential streets, semi-rural properties and light industrial operators along the fringes creates a varied set of tech problems we deal with regularly out here. NBN connectivity in Skye is a consistent source of frustration for residents.
Parts of the suburb are on NBN fixed wireless rather than FTTN or fibre, and the relatively flat open terrain combined with occasional interference from nearby industrial equipment causes signal degradation issues that most ISP support teams simply cannot diagnose remotely. We also see a high volume of ageing laptops and desktops in Skye that have been pushed well past their useful hardware life, running slowly not because they are broken but because spinning hard drives and insufficient RAM are the real bottleneck rather than any fault.
Virus and malware infections are another regular call out here, particularly on family machines where multiple users share a single device and browser security hygiene is inconsistent. Whether you’re dealing with an Acer laptop that takes fifteen minutes to boot from an ageing HDD, an HP desktop with a network adapter that keeps dropping out of Device Manager after Windows updates or a fixed wireless NBN connection that degrades during peak evening hours, we will troubleshoot your problems and fix it with a minimal amount of fuss.
You don’t pay a cent if we can’t fix your issue!

Recent Job – Acer Aspire HDD Replacement, Karingal Drive, Skye
A client on Karingal Drive contacted us after their Acer laptop had become almost completely unusable over the past several months. The machine was taking close to twenty minutes to boot from startup to a usable desktop and was freezing regularly during normal use.
The original 1TB spinning HDD was sitting at 47 percent health with a high count of reallocated sectors and pending sectors, meaning the drive was well into the early stages of failure. The slow boot times and regular freezing were a direct result of the machine waiting extended periods for the failing drive to respond to read requests, a pattern that gets progressively worse as more sectors are reallocated and the drive controller spends increasing time attempting to recover data from degraded areas of the platter.
We imaged the existing drive immediately while it was still readable, transferring the full contents including the client’s documents, photos and browser data to an external drive as a safety backup. We then replaced the failing HDD with a Crucial MX500 500GB SSD. We chose the Crucial MX500 over alternatives like the Kingston A400 for a specific reason.
Most older Acer laptops has a known tendency to run slightly warm under the storage area due to the chassis design, and the Kingston A400 uses older TLC NAND that performs less consistently under sustained thermal load in laptops that run warm.
The Crucial MX500 uses 3D NAND with a more robust controller that handles thermal variation better and carries a three year warranty, making it the right long term choice for a family laptop in daily use. Frequently Asked Questions – Computer Repairs Skye
My laptop is running very slowly. Does it need replacing?
In most cases no. Slow laptops in Skye are almost always caused by an ageing spinning hard drive rather than a fundamental hardware fault, and replacing it with an SSD delivers a dramatic performance improvement at a fraction of the cost of a new machine.
Read our guide on factors to consider before buying a new computer and our post on why SSDs are worth the investment before making a decision. We give honest advice on whether an upgrade makes financial sense before doing any work.
My NBN fixed wireless keeps dropping out in the evenings. What is causing that?
Evening dropouts on fixed wireless NBN are most commonly caused by peak hour congestion on the fixed wireless tower combined with a modem that is not handling marginal signal conditions efficiently. In some cases interference from nearby industrial equipment also plays a role. Check our guide on why NBN is slow and our post on what to try when NBN keeps dropping out. We also cover NBN alternatives for properties where fixed wireless performance is consistently poor.
Do you come out to Skye the same day?
Yes, in most cases we can be at your home or business the same day. Call us on 0484 357 559 or hit the book now button and one of our technicians will get back to you quickly.
My drive health check is showing a low score. Is my data at risk?
Yes, a low drive health score means the drive is in the early stages of failure and you should treat your data as at risk immediately. Stop using the machine for anything important and call us straight away. The sooner we can image the drive the better the chance of recovering everything cleanly. Our post on how we fixed a machine with an SSD on its last leg covers this exact scenario.
Can you help with virus removal in Skye?
Yes, virus and malware removal is one of the most common jobs we do in Skye. We remove all types of infections including cryptominers, browser hijackers, ransomware and spyware, and we set up proper security measures to reduce the risk of reinfection. Read more about the limitations of standard antivirus software on our blog.
Do you work on both Windows and Mac in Skye?
Yes, we work on both Windows computers and Apple Macs including MacBooks, iMacs and Mac Minis. We handle everything from HDD to SSD upgrades and virus removal to RAM upgrades and full system reinstalls.
What warranty do you provide on repairs?
We back all our work with a 12-month workmanship guarantee, well above the three month standard most repair shops offer. If we can’t find a solution, you don’t pay a cent.
Do you service surrounding areas as well as Skye?
Yes, we also service Frankston, Carrum Downs, Langwarrin and Karingal. Feel free to pass our name on to your neighbours, workmates and sports groups.
