Looking for computer repairs in Ferntree Gully? Computer Technicians is here to help. We provide fast, same-day service to your home or business.
Ferntree Gully sits at the foot of the Dandenong Ranges and the local environment throws up some very specific hardware problems we see regularly out here. Storm related power fluctuations in the foothills are more frequent than in flatter suburban areas, and these cause PSU failures and in some cases drive corruption on machines that were not properly shut down during a power cut. We also see a higher than average number of SATA controller faults on older desktop builds where the drive randomly disappears from Device Manager, causing the system to stall on boot or throw a BSOD with no obvious explanation. Dust and debris from the ranges accelerates fan and heatsink clogging on both desktops and laptops far faster than in drier inner suburbs, which leads to MacBook Air fans seizing and machines thermal throttling badly before shutting down entirely to protect the CPU. Whether you’re dealing with an HP desktop that keeps corrupting its boot sector after power events, a Dell Latitude with a network adapter that drops out of Device Manager after Windows updates or an iMac throwing display artefacts across the screen under GPU load, we will troubleshoot your problems and fix it with a minimal amount of fuss.

Recent Job – iMac Display Artefacts & GPU Fault, Station Street, Ferntree Gully
A client on Station Street contacted us after their iMac 27 inch 2015 started displaying strange visual artefacts across the screen. The problems started as occasional flickering lines during heavy workloads and worsened over several weeks to the point where random colour blocks and corrupted textures appeared across the entire display before the machine crashed entirely. The client was a freelance photographer who relied on the machine for editing work in Adobe Lightroom and had been putting up with the worsening symptoms for weeks before it became completely unusable.
Our technician visited the same day and ran a full hardware diagnostic. The artefact pattern and the consistent worsening under GPU load pointed immediately toward a GPU hardware failure rather than a driver or software issue. The 2015 iMac 27 inch shipped with an AMD Radeon R9 M390 or M395X GPU depending on configuration, and this model has a well documented and widespread failure issue caused by a manufacturing defect in the solder connections between the GPU die and the logic board. As the GPU heats and cools through normal use cycles over years, microfractures develop in the defective solder connections and cause intermittent then permanent GPU failures that produce exactly the artefacting and crashes the client was experiencing. Apple ran a repair program for affected units for a period but that program has since closed, leaving owners without a manufacturer remedy.
We presented the client with two options. A full logic board replacement using a certified refurbished board, which is the most reliable long term fix, or a GPU reflow, which involves applying precise controlled heat to the logic board using a rework station to reflow the solder connections around the GPU die. A reflow costs significantly less than a full board replacement and has a strong success rate on that specific fault, but is not a permanent fix as the underlying solder quality issue remains and the fault can recur within one to two years depending on how hard the machine is pushed. We cover this topic in more detail in our guide on Mac repair vs replacement if you want to understand the options better before calling us.
Given the iMac was otherwise in excellent condition with a healthy SSD and full RAM, and given the client’s budget, we recommended attempting the reflow first as the most cost effective path. We removed the logic board, performed the reflow using a controlled rework station at the correct temperature profile for that specific board, reassembled the machine and ran it through an extended GPU stress test using Unigine Heaven for two hours. Not a single artefact. The machine ran completely stable throughout. We were clear with the client that the repair is not permanent in the same way a board replacement would be and strongly recommended running a continuous Time Machine backup to an external drive going forward in case the fault recurs. Client was delighted to have the machine working again at a fraction of the cost of a replacement iMac.
Frequently Asked Questions – Computer Repairs Ferntree Gully
Why does my computer seem to fail more often after a storm in Ferntree Gully?
Power fluctuations during storms in the foothills area are more frequent and more severe than in flatter suburbs. These fluctuations cause PSU failures and in some cases corrupt data on drives that were not properly shut down during a power event. A quality surge protector is something we recommend to every client in the Ferntree Gully area. You can read more about how power related shutdowns affect desktops in our case study.
My hard drive keeps randomly disappearing from Device Manager. What is causing that?
Intermittent drive detection failures in Device Manager are usually caused by a failing SATA controller, a loose SATA data cable or a degraded drive. We run a full diagnostic to identify which component is at fault before recommending a repair, as the cause varies significantly from machine to machine. Our post on how we fixed a machine with an SSD on its last leg covers a similar fault in detail.
Do you come out to Ferntree Gully the same day?
Yes, in most cases we can be at your home or business the same day. Call us on 0484 357 559 or hit the book now button and one of our technicians will get back to you quickly.
Can you fix display artefacts on older iMacs?
Yes, display artefacts on 2011 to 2015 iMac models are commonly caused by a known GPU solder fault. We offer both GPU reflow repairs and full logic board replacements depending on the client’s budget and the condition of the machine. Read our guide on whether it is worth repairing a broken MacBook or Mac for more detail.
My MacBook fan is making a loud grinding noise. Is that fixable?
Yes, a grinding fan is almost always a seized fan bearing caused by dust ingestion, which is common in the Ferntree Gully area. We replace the fan with a genuine grade part, clean out the heatsink and reapply thermal paste while we have the machine open, which addresses both the noise and any thermal issues the machine may have developed.
My NBN keeps dropping out. What should I do?
NBN dropouts in Ferntree Gully are often modem related rather than a line fault. Start by checking our guide on why home internet keeps dropping out and our post on what to try when NBN keeps dropping out. If those steps don’t resolve it, call us and we will come out and diagnose it properly.
Do you work on both Windows and Mac in Ferntree Gully?
Yes, we work on both Windows computers and Apple Macs including MacBooks, iMacs and Mac Minis. We handle everything from data recovery and logic board repairs to SSD and RAM upgrades and software issues.
What warranty do you provide on repairs?
We back all our work with a 12-month workmanship guarantee, well above the three month standard most repair shops offer. If we can’t find a solution, you don’t pay a cent.
Do you service surrounding areas as well as Ferntree Gully?
Yes, we also service Boronia, The Basin, Scoresby and Upper Ferntree Gully. Feel free to pass our name on to your neighbours, workmates and sports groups.
