Portsea is a prestigious coastal community at the very tip of the Mornington Peninsula, home to some of Victoria’s most sought after holiday properties alongside a small permanent residential population. The tech environment here is shaped almost entirely by the coastal character of the suburb.

Salt air and sea spray from the waters of Port Phillip Bay and Bass Strait create one of the most corrosive hardware environments we encounter anywhere in Melbourne’s extended service area, with accelerated oxidation on charging ports, RAM slot contacts and GPU connector pins on machines stored in holiday homes that sit without climate control between visits. New device setup and data migration is a particularly common job in Portsea, where permanent residents and holiday home owners upgrading from older machines need everything set up properly from scratch including email accounts, Microsoft 365, data transferred from the old machine and a reliable backup system in place before heading back to the city.

Internet connectivity at this end of the Peninsula relies on 4G home broadband or NBN fixed wireless for most properties, and proper router configuration is critical to getting reliable performance in an area where signal quality is more variable than in well-serviced suburban areas. Whether you’re dealing with a brand new desktop that needs setting up from scratch, a laptop with a corroded charging port after a damp winter at the holiday house or a 4G connection that has never been configured properly since the modem was installed, we will troubleshoot your problems and fix it with a minimal amount of fuss.

You don’t pay if we can’t find a solution.

Recent Job – Lenovo IdeaCentre AIO 24 Setup, Office 365 & Data Migration, Point Nepean Road, Portsea

A client on Point Nepean Road contacted us after purchasing a new Lenovo IdeaCentre AIO 24 to replace their ageing desktop, which had reached the end of its useful life. Lenovo all in one setup Portsea

The old machine was running Windows 10 on a failing hard drive and the client needed everything moved across to the new machine cleanly, including all personal documents and photos spanning several years, their email accounts, Microsoft Office and a proper Microsoft 365 subscription set up for the first time.

They had attempted the initial Windows setup on the new Lenovo themselves but had stopped partway through, unsure how to proceed with Microsoft account configuration, and called us to take it from there.

We always set up a local admin account first on new machines for clients who are not familiar with the implications of a Microsoft account login, as it gives us a clean working environment to configure everything else before linking accounts. We then set up a Microsoft 365 Personal subscription for the client, created their Microsoft account and linked it to the new machine, installed the full Microsoft 365 suite including Word, Excel, Outlook and OneDrive, and configured OneDrive to automatically back up the Documents, Desktop and Pictures folders continuously to the cloud.

For email we configured two accounts in Outlook. The client’s primary email was a longstanding ISP email address running on IMAP, which we added to Outlook and confirmed was downloading and syncing the full historical mailbox correctly. The client also had a secondary Gmail account they used for personal correspondence, which we added as a second account in Outlook so both inboxes were accessible from a single application without needing to switch between browser tabs.

We then connected the failing old desktop externally and transferred all documents, photos and personal files to the new machine. The old drive was producing read errors on approximately 8 percent of its sectors, meaning we needed to run the transfer using a tool with error retry tolerance rather than a standard file copy, which would have abandoned files on sectors that required multiple read attempts.

All critical files were recovered and transferred successfully. We organised the migrated files into a clear folder structure under Documents and confirmed OneDrive had begun syncing the new content to the cloud before we left. We also ran a full Windows Update cycle on the new Lenovo and installed the manufacturer drivers from the Lenovo Vantage support application to ensure all hardware was running on current firmware. The client had a fully configured, backed up and ready to use machine before we left.

Yes, Microsoft 365 setup and email configuration is a regular part of every new PC setup we do. We install the full Microsoft 365 suite, configure all your email accounts in Outlook including IMAP, POP and Microsoft accounts, and set up OneDrive for automatic cloud backup. My laptop has developed faults after sitting at the Portsea holiday house over winter. Can you help?

Yes, salt air corrosion on charging ports, RAM contacts and connector pins is a very common fault in holiday properties at the tip of the Peninsula that sit unoccupied through the damp winter months. In many cases a thorough cleaning of the affected contacts resolves the issue without parts replacement. Read our guide on whether it is worth repairing your Mac or laptop if you are weighing up repair versus replacement.

My internet connection at Portsea has never worked well. Can you help?

Yes, 4G home broadband and fixed wireless NBN connections at the tip of the Peninsula often underperform because the router was installed on factory default settings without any optimisation for the local signal environment. We assess your signal levels, reconfigure the router for best performance and advise on whether an alternative solution would serve you better. Read our overview of NBN alternatives for context on the connectivity options available at the Peninsula tip.

Do you work on both Windows and Mac in Portsea?

Yes, we work on both Windows computers and Apple Macs including MacBooks, iMacs and Mac Minis. We handle everything from new PC setup and Office 365 configuration to hardware upgrades and data recovery.

What warranty do you provide on repairs and setup?

We back all our work with a 12-month workmanship guarantee, well above the three month standard most repair shops offer. If we can’t fix it, you don’t pay a cent.

Do you service surrounding areas as well as Portsea?

Yes, we also service Sorrento, Blairgowrie, Rye and Tootgarook. Feel free to pass our name on to your neighbours, workmates and sports groups.
