Pakenham is one of Melbourne’s fastest growing outer suburbs, home to a large and diverse community of families, tradespeople and small business owners across a mix of newer estate developments and older established streets. The rapid growth here means we see a wide variety of tech problems from households and businesses at all stages of their technology setup.
Virus and malware infections are among the most common calls we receive from Pakenham, particularly on family machines and laptops used by younger household members where browser habits and download behaviour expose the machine to a range of threats that standard antivirus tools are not always equipped to catch. Browser hijacking malware in particular is something we see regularly out here, where malicious software modifies browser settings, DNS configurations and Windows host files to redirect every website visit to phishing pages or fake search engines designed to steal credentials or push further malware installations.
Slow laptops and desktops on ageing spinning hard drives are another constant, as are NBN connectivity problems tied to the FTTN infrastructure serving parts of Pakenham where copper line quality varies significantly between streets. Wi-Fi coverage across the larger homes and blocks common in Pakenham’s newer estate developments is also a regular job, with a single ISP supplied router completely unable to cover a large modern floor plan.
Whether you’re dealing with a laptop where every website redirects to a suspicious page, a desktop that takes fifteen minutes to load Windows or an NBN connection that cannot sustain a video call during peak hours, we will troubleshoot your problems and fix it with a minimal amount of fuss.

Recent Job – Browser Hijack & Phishing Redirect Malware Removal, Main Street, Pakenham
A client on Main Street contacted us after every website they visited on their HP Pavilion laptop was redirecting to suspicious pages. Typing a bank URL into Chrome would land on a fake login page. Searching Google would redirect to an unfamiliar search engine pushing sponsored links to dubious software downloads. Even typing a direct IP address into the browser bar was being intercepted. Windows Defender had been run and found nothing. The client was understandably concerned about whether their banking credentials had already been compromised.
This infection pattern, every URL redirected regardless of what is typed, points toward malware operating below the browser level rather than a simple browser extension hijack. Three components are typically modified by this class of infection: the browser’s own settings, the Windows DNS client configuration and the Windows hosts file.
The hosts file is a system level text file that Windows checks before contacting any DNS server, meaning any entry in the hosts file takes absolute precedence over the correct DNS resolution. By adding entries to the hosts file pointing common banking and search URLs at attacker controlled IP addresses the malware can redirect traffic even if the browser itself is clean and even if the DNS settings appear correct.
We booted into Safe Mode with Networking to prevent the malware’s active processes from interfering with removal. We ran Malwarebytes and ESET offline scanners which identified and removed a browser hijacker, a DNS changer component and a hosts file modifier across all three browsers installed on the machine. We then manually inspected and cleaned the Windows hosts file, flushed the DNS cache, reset all three browsers to factory defaults including clearing stored passwords, cookies and extensions and reset the Windows DNS client configuration to automatic. We ran a second full scan after cleaning to confirm the machine was clear.
We strongly recommended the client contact their bank to report the potential credential exposure and change passwords for all accounts accessed from that machine. We also set up Windows Defender’s tamper protection settings and configured automatic Malwarebytes scheduled scans going forward. Machine was clean and all redirects stopped completely.
Frequently Asked Questions
Every website I visit is redirecting to a suspicious page. What is causing that?
This is the signature behaviour of a browser hijacking malware infection that has modified your Windows hosts file and DNS configuration, not just your browser settings. Standard antivirus tools often miss these because the modification is made at the operating system level below where most real-time protection operates. We remove all components of the infection including the hosts file entries, DNS changer and browser hijacker, and restore your system configuration to its correct state. Read more about our virus and malware removal service and the limitations of standard antivirus software.
I think I may have had my banking credentials stolen by a phishing redirect. What should I do?
Contact your bank immediately and report a potential credential compromise. Change your passwords for any account accessed from the infected machine as a priority, starting with banking and email. Do not use the infected machine for any sensitive transactions until it has been professionally cleaned. Call us and we will get to you the same day. The sooner the machine is cleaned the better.
Do you come out to Pakenham the same day?
Yes, in most cases we can be at your home or business the same day. Call us on 0484 357 559 or hit the book now button and one of our technicians will get back to you quickly.
My laptop is running slowly. Does it need replacing?
In most cases no. Slow laptops in Pakenham are almost always caused by an ageing spinning HDD rather than a fundamental hardware fault. Read our guide on factors to consider before buying a new computer and our post on why SSDs are worth the investment before making a decision.
My Wi-Fi does not reach the back of my new build home in Pakenham. Can you fix that?
Yes, large new build floor plans in Pakenham’s estate developments with alfresco areas and home offices at the rear are one of the most common Wi-Fi jobs we do in the area. A single ISP supplied router near the front door simply cannot cover a modern large home. We install the right mesh Wi-Fi system to give you reliable coverage throughout. Read our post on Wi-Fi options for separate spaces and outbuildings for more detail.
Do you work on both Windows and Mac in Pakenham?
Yes, we work on both Windows computers and Apple Macs including MacBooks, iMacs and Mac Minis. We handle everything from malware removal and virus cleaning to SSD and RAM upgrades and full network installs.
What warranty do you provide on repairs?
We back all our work with a 12-month workmanship guarantee, well above the three month standard most repair shops offer. If we can’t find a solution, you don’t pay a cent.
Do you service surrounding areas as well as Pakenham?
Yes, we also service Officer, Beaconsfield, Clyde North and Pakenham South. Feel free to pass our name on to your neighbours, workmates and sports groups.
