Hallam is a busy outer south-eastern suburb sitting between Dandenong and Narre Warren, with a strong mix of residential families, light industrial businesses and tradespeople across a range of established homes and newer estate developments.

Computer Technicians has seen a mixture of tech problems in Hallam.

Overheating laptops are one of the most common calls from the suburb, particularly gaming and mid-range laptops like Acer Nitros and Lenovo IdeaPads.

Slow computers with hard drives are a constant call from families who have been putting off an upgrade.

Virus and malware infections are another regular job, particularly on shared family machines and workplace laptops.

NBN connectivity on FTTN serving parts of Hallam is a recurring issue, with longer copper runs in the outer streets producing poor line quality that causes dropouts on ageing modems. Wi-Fi coverage across the larger homes and double storey properties in Hallam’s newer estates is also a regular frustration.

Whether you’re dealing with a gaming laptop that throttles or a family desktop that takes 15 minutes to open a browser or even an NBN connection that drops out every evening during peak hours, Computer Technicians will troubleshoot your problems and fix it with a minimal amount of fuss.

What We Can Help You With

We have serviced clients right across Hallam including families near Hallam Primary School and Hallam Senior Secondary College, residents along Hallam Road and Princes Highway, members at Hallam Recreation Reserve and Hallam Football Club and small business operators and tradespeople throughout the light industrial areas along the suburb’s commercial corridor. Recent Job – Desktop PC WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR BSOD, Princes Highway, Hallam

A client on Princes Highway contacted Computer Technicians because their desktop PC had started throwing a WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR blue screen randomly. The crashes had no pattern. Sometimes it ran fine for hours. Other times it crashed within minutes of startup. The client had already tried reinstalling Windows with no improvement.

A WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR points to a hardware level fault, not software. We analysed the minidump files and the error was showing the CPU as the culprit. We ran HWMonitor and tested it. whea_uncorrectable_error_hallam_client

The CPU was hitting 94 degrees within 6 minutes and it’s well above safe operating range. We opened the case. The CPU heatsink was full with dust and the thermal paste had completely dried out.

We cleaned the heatsink and fan thoroughly and applied fresh Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut.

We also checked the PSU output voltages using a multimeter.

The 12V rail was reading 11.3V under load, which is outside the ATX spec tolerance of + /- 5%. A drooping 12V rail under load causes CPU voltage instability, which is a known trigger for WHEA errors even after thermals are addressed.

We replaced the PSU with a Corsair CV550 550W unit. After reassembly we ran a 30 minute stress test. CPU temperatures peaked at 71 degrees. No BSOD. Voltages stable throughout.

Frequently Asked Questions – Computer Repairs Hallam

My gaming laptop runs fine for a while then gets slow and drops frames. What is causing that?

This is thermal throttling. When a gaming laptop CPU or GPU reaches its maximum rated temperature it automatically reduces clock speed to bring temperatures down, causing the dramatic performance drop you experience partway through a session. The two most common causes are a heatsink clogged with dust reducing airflow and dried out thermal paste creating an insulating gap between the processor and the heatpipes. Both are fixable with a proper disassembly clean and thermal paste replacement. Read our guide on our computer dust cleaning service for more detail.

What thermal paste do you use on gaming laptops?

We use Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut on gaming laptops that run sustained high temperatures. Its thermal conductivity rating of 12.5 W/mK outperforms standard compounds like Arctic Silver 5 at 8.7 W/mK and it maintains its consistency better under repeated high temperature cycles than cheaper alternatives, which is important in a gaming laptop that runs hot regularly.

Do you come out to Hallam the same day?

Yes, in most cases we can be at your home or business the same day. Call us on 0484 357 559 or hit the book now button and one of our technicians will get back to you quickly.

My laptop is running out of storage. Can I add a second drive?

Many laptops including popular gaming models like the Acer Nitro 5 have a second M.2 slot on the motherboard that the manufacturer leaves unpopulated as a cost saving measure. If your model has one we can install an additional SSD without touching or replacing the original drive, giving you extra storage capacity without any data migration required. We assess your specific model first to confirm availability. Read our computer upgrades service page for more detail.

My NBN drops out in the evenings. What is causing that?

Evening NBN dropouts on FTTN connections in Hallam are most commonly caused by peak hour network congestion combined with a marginal modem that loses sync under the increased line load. An upgraded modem with better sync stability under marginal conditions significantly reduces dropout frequency. Read our guide on why home internet keeps dropping out and our post on what to try when NBN keeps dropping out.

Do you work on both Windows and Mac in Hallam?

Yes, we work on both Windows computers and Apple Macs including MacBooks, iMacs and Mac Minis. We handle everything from gaming laptop thermal repairs and SSD upgrades to virus removal and full network installs.

What warranty do you provide on repairs?

We back all our work with a 12-month workmanship guarantee, well above the three month standard most repair shops offer. If we can’t find a solution, you don’t pay a cent.

Do you service surrounding areas as well as Hallam?

Yes, we also service Narre Warren, Dandenong, Endeavour Hills and Berwick. Feel free to pass our name on to your neighbours, workmates and sports groups.
