Recent Job – Suspicious PC Restarts

One of my clients in Glen Wavery rang me this morning mentioning that his Windows 11 PC was restarting every few minutes for no reason. I visited him later this afternoon and opened the reliability history. To my surprise, no hardware error, no blue screen of death …nothing. Just a regular “the previous shutdown was unexpected error….”

I ran burn in tests, Windows Memory Diagnostic tests and they all passed. I opened the chassis and noticed that the PSU was a Corsair one. Corsairs are well a well-known brand and manufacture excellent PSUs, so I ruled it out.

I updated the BIOS, checked all hardware including the SSD health, GPU etc and couldn’t find any red flags.

I booted up the Memory test software that we generally use and let it run for one pass. In about 20 minutes or so, it threw an error and I concluded that it was a memory/RAM issue.

I replaced the memory with another one (fortunately I had a couple of old DDR3 ones lying around in the office) and ran the test again. Bingo! No errors and the issue was resolved in less than an hour.
