Waterways is a modern master-planned estate community nestled around the Waterways wetlands reserve between Keysborough and Patterson Lakes, home to a relatively young, affluent demographic of families in large, well-appointed homes. The tech challenges here are distinctly different from older established suburbs. Because the housing stock is predominantly large, modern single and double storey homes built within the last fifteen to twenty years, the most common problems we deal with in Waterways are not ageing hardware failures but rather Wi-Fi coverage issues driven by the sheer size of these properties. Large open-plan floor plans with double storey sections, home theatres, outdoor entertaining areas and multi-vehicle garages all create coverage demands that the single ISP-supplied router positioned near the NBN connection point at the front of the house simply cannot meet. Smart home device overload is another recurring issue, with households running dozens of Wi-Fi connected devices simultaneously causing congestion on consumer grade routers that were never designed for that kind of load. We also see a growing volume of home office setup requests in Waterways from professionals who have relocated here and are setting up proper work-from-home environments for the first time. Slow laptops on ageing HDDs and virus infections on family machines round out the regular call list. Whether you’re dealing with dead Wi-Fi zones at the back of your large home, a laptop that takes ten minutes to boot or a home office that needs a proper professional setup, we will troubleshoot your problems and fix it with a minimal amount of fuss.

Recent Job – Whole Home Mesh Install & Smart Home Device Overload Fix, Lighthouse Drive, Waterways

A client on Lighthouse Drive contacted us after months of unreliable Wi-Fi throughout their large double storey home. The main living areas at the front of the house had reasonable signal but the upstairs bedrooms, the home theatre room, the rear alfresco entertaining area and the double garage at the back of the property all had weak or no usable signal. On top of that the network was dropping out randomly throughout the day, particularly when multiple family members were home simultaneously using laptops, phones, smart TVs and home automation devices. deco x75pro setup waterways

Our technician visited the same day and ran a full Wi-Fi assessment. The property was running an ISP supplied Technicolor modem router positioned near the front door. The house was a large double storey home with an open plan ground floor, a concrete slab construction upstairs and a significant distance between the front of the property and the rear alfresco and garage. The single router was simply unable to cover the floor plan. We also connected a device to the router’s management portal and counted 34 devices actively connected to the network. A consumer grade router handling 34 simultaneous devices including smart home automation, security cameras, streaming devices and multiple work laptops was running at well over its practical capacity, which explained the random dropouts regardless of signal strength in the front rooms.

We recommended and installed a three node TP-Link Deco XE75 Pro mesh system. One node at the NBN modem near the front entrance, one centrally on the upper floor and one at the rear of the ground floor covering the alfresco and garage. We chose the Deco XE75 Pro over alternatives specifically because its tri-band design with a dedicated 6GHz backhaul channel keeps inter-node communication on a separate frequency from the client device traffic, which is critical in a home with 34 connected devices competing for bandwidth. We also configured the mesh system with QoS settings prioritising the client’s two work laptops over smart home and entertainment traffic, and separated IoT and smart home devices onto the 2.4GHz band to reduce congestion on the 5GHz band used by laptops and phones. Full signal coverage throughout the entire property including the alfresco and garage within the hour. Random dropouts stopped completely. Client said it was the first time the whole family had been able to use the internet simultaneously without anyone complaining.

Frequently Asked Questions – Computer Repairs Waterways

Why is my Wi-Fi unreliable even though my home is relatively new?

Large modern homes in Waterways with double storey construction, concrete slabs, home theatres and outdoor entertaining areas create significant Wi-Fi coverage challenges regardless of how new the building is. A single ISP supplied router near the front door simply cannot cover a large modern floor plan. A properly designed mesh Wi-Fi system with nodes positioned throughout the property is the reliable solution. Read our Wi-Fi interference and coverage case study for more detail.

My network keeps dropping out even in rooms close to the router. What is causing that?

Random dropouts in rooms close to the router in a large household are almost always caused by the router hitting its maximum device capacity rather than a signal issue. Consumer grade routers typically struggle when more than fifteen to twenty devices are connected simultaneously. Modern households with smart home automation, security cameras, multiple work laptops, phones and streaming devices frequently exceed this without realising it. Read our guide on the difference between 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi for context on how band congestion contributes to this problem.

Do you come out to Waterways the same day?

Yes, in most cases we can be at your home or business the same day. Call us on 0484 357 559 or hit the book now button and one of our technicians will get back to you quickly.

Can you help set up a proper home office in Waterways?

Yes, home office setup including dual monitor configuration, printer setup, ergonomic workstation arrangement and NBN optimisation for video calls is a regular job in Waterways for professionals who have relocated from the city. Read our computer setup service page for more detail on what we cover.

My laptop is running slowly. Does it need replacing?

In most cases no. Slow laptops are almost always caused by an ageing spinning HDD rather than a fundamental hardware fault. Read our guide on factors to consider before buying a new computer and our post on why SSDs are worth the investment before making a decision.

Do you work on both Windows and Mac in Waterways?

Yes, we work on both Windows computers and Apple Macs including MacBooks, iMacs and Mac Minis. We handle everything from mesh Wi-Fi installs and virus removal to SSD and RAM upgrades and full home office setups.

What warranty do you provide on repairs?

We back all our work with a 12-month workmanship guarantee, well above the three month standard most repair shops offer. If we can’t find a solution, you don’t pay a cent.

Do you service surrounding areas as well as Waterways?

Yes, we also service Keysborough, Patterson Lakes, Bangholme and Braeside. Feel free to pass our name on to your neighbours, workmates and sports groups.
