The senior resident had been prompted for a two-factor authentication code when trying to sign into iCloud on her Mac and had been waiting for the code to arrive as an SMS to her iPhone for over twenty minutes without receiving it. Several retries had produced the same result. The client had also tried on her behalf and was equally stuck.

The issue was not with the Apple ID itself but with SMS delivery. Older mobile numbers, particularly those on certain prepaid plans or accounts that have been inactive for extended periods, can experience delays or failures in receiving automated SMS messages from Apple’s authentication servers, either due to carrier filtering of short code messages or intermittent network delivery issues. The code was being generated by Apple correctly but was not reliably arriving at the handset.

The solution was straightforward once identified. Apple’s 2FA prompt includes a second option beneath the SMS field that most users overlook: instead of receiving a text message, Apple can call the trusted phone number and deliver the code as an automated voice message. We selected the phone call option on the Mac, the client’s mother received the automated call on her iPhone within seconds, heard the code read aloud and entered it successfully. iCloud access was restored immediately. We also walked the client through how to use the phone call option in future and confirmed her trusted phone number and trusted device list were both current to avoid similar issues going forward.
