Tecoma sits in the foothills of the Dandenong Ranges along Burwood Highway and the properties here are a mix of older timber homes, split level bush blocks and creative studios nestled into the hillside, each presenting its own distinct tech challenges. The Ranges environment means fine organic dust and moisture from the bush work their way into computer cases and laptop vents considerably faster than in flat suburban Melbourne, leading to accelerated heatsink clogging, fan bearing seizure and in some cases corrosion on GPU and RAM contacts from the persistent ambient humidity. Split level timber homes on sloped blocks are notoriously difficult Wi-Fi environments. Timber framing does not block signals the way brick does but the level changes, stairwells and irregular floor plans scatter signals unpredictably, leaving home offices, studios and lower ground floor rooms in dead zones that a single router positioned anywhere in the house simply cannot resolve. NBN connectivity in parts of Tecoma is still on FTTN infrastructure using the existing copper network, and the combination of older copper lines, the hilly terrain and the moisture that the Ranges climate introduces into cable pits and junction boxes makes line quality more variable here than in suburban areas, causing modem sync issues that most ISP support teams cannot diagnose remotely. Whether you’re dealing with an Asus laptop with a seized fan and a CPU throttling to almost nothing under load, a Windows desktop throwing a BAD_POOL_HEADER BSOD after RAM corruption from moisture related oxidation or an NBN connection that drops sync every time it rains heavily, we will troubleshoot your problems and fix it with a minimal amount of fuss.

Recent Job – Asus Laptop Seized Fan, Old Belgrave Road, Tecoma

A client on Old Belgrave Road contacted us after their Asus ZenBook 14 had been running increasingly slowly over several months and had started making a loud rattling noise from the fan area. The machine had reached a point where it was almost unusable for the graphic design work the client relied on it for, with applications taking several minutes to open and the system grinding to a halt whenever she ran design software. She had been putting off doing anything about it assuming it would be expensive to fix. She also mentioned the Wi-Fi in her home studio on the lower ground floor of her split level bush property was so weak that she regularly had to come upstairs just to get a usable connection for client communications.asus zenbook fan issue

The rattling noise from the fan confirmed our initial suspicion before we even opened the machine. We disassembled the laptop and found the fan bearing had partially seized from fine organic particles drawn in through the bottom vents. The Asus Zenbook has vents positioned along the bottom of the chassis that sit close to any surface the laptop is placed on, making it particularly susceptible to drawing in dust, pollen and organic debris from the bush environment. The partially seized bearing was causing the fan to run at reduced speed and produce the rattling noise, while the partial airflow restriction was causing the CPU to thermal throttle under any sustained workload, which explained the dramatic performance degradation the client had been experiencing during design work.

We replaced the fan with a genuine Asus grade replacement part. We ruled out third party fan units immediately for this model because the Asus uses a proprietary fan connector pinout and third party units have a documented incompatibility rate on that generation, often preventing the system from accurately reading fan speed and causing the machine to either run the fan at maximum speed permanently or generate fan error warnings that prevent normal operation. Genuine grade only on this job. While the machine was open we also replaced the dried out thermal paste on the CPU with Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut. We chose Kryonaut specifically because the laptop runs in a bush environment where organic dust will continue to accumulate in the cooling system faster than average, meaning the machine will inevitably run warmer between cleans than it would in an urban environment. Kryonaut’s superior thermal conductivity and longer service life under sustained heat makes it the right long term choice for a machine in that environment. After reassembly and a thorough clean of the heatsink fins we ran the machine under a sustained design software workload. CPU temperatures under full load dropped from 97 degrees to 68 degrees and applications opened almost instantly. The client said it felt completely different.

Frequently Asked Questions – Computer Repairs Tecoma

Why does my laptop accumulate dust so quickly in Tecoma?

The Dandenong Ranges environment produces higher levels of fine organic particulate matter than flat suburban Melbourne, including pollen, fine bark particles and bush debris that get drawn into laptop vents far faster than urban dust. Laptop vents positioned on the bottom of the chassis, which is common on many models, make this worse by sitting directly above whatever surface the machine is placed on. We recommend professional cleaning every six to twelve months for any laptop used regularly in a bush environment in the Ranges. Read more about protecting your computer from dust on our blog.

What does a BAD_POOL_HEADER BSOD mean?

A BAD_POOL_HEADER error is a Windows memory management fault that usually points toward corrupted RAM, a failing driver or in some cases early stage SSD failure causing read errors in memory mapped files. In the Ranges environment we also see it caused by RAM slot oxidation from ambient humidity affecting the electrical contact between the RAM stick and the motherboard slot. We run a full diagnostic covering both RAM and storage before recommending any repair. Our post on diagnosing unexpected shutdowns covers related memory fault patterns in detail.

Do you come out to Tecoma the same day?

Yes, in most cases we can be at your home or business the same day. Call us on 0484 357 559 or hit the book now button and one of our technicians will get back to you quickly.

Can you fix Wi-Fi dead zones in my split level home in Tecoma?

Yes, split level timber homes on sloped blocks are one of the most common Wi-Fi jobs we do in the Ranges area. The combination of level changes, stairwells and timber floor construction scatters signals in ways that standard mesh placement rules do not always account for. We assess your specific property layout and install the right mesh Wi-Fi system with nodes positioned to give you reliable coverage on every level. Read our post on Wi-Fi options for separate spaces for more detail.

My NBN drops out every time it rains heavily. What is causing that?

Rain related NBN dropouts in Tecoma are almost always caused by moisture entering cable pits or junction boxes in the copper network infrastructure, which increases line resistance and causes FTTN connections to drop sync. This is a known issue with the Ranges copper network in wet weather. In most cases a modem upgrade to a unit with better line tolerance under marginal conditions significantly reduces the frequency of dropouts. Read our guide on why home internet keeps dropping out and our post on what to try when NBN keeps dropping out for more detail.

Do you work on both Windows and Mac in Tecoma?

Yes, we work on both Windows computers and Apple Macs including MacBooks, iMacs and Mac Minis. We handle everything from fan replacements and thermal paste jobs to SSD and RAM upgrades and data recovery.

What warranty do you provide on repairs?

We back all our work with a 12-month workmanship guarantee, well above the three month standard most repair shops offer. If we can’t find a solution, you don’t pay a cent.

Do you service surrounding areas as well as Tecoma?

Yes, we also service Belgrave, Belgrave Heights, Upwey and Selby. Feel free to pass our name on to your neighbours, workmates and sports groups.
