Recent Job – MacBook Air Fan Replacement & EFI Recovery, Truemans Road, St Andrews Beach

A client on Truemans Road contacted us with two separate issues on their MacBook Air 13 inch 2020 Intel. The first was a loud grinding noise coming from the fan that had been getting progressively worse over the summer. The second was that the machine had stopped booting cleanly after being left at the beach house for six weeks between visits, instead showing a black screen with no activity for several minutes before eventually loading into macOS very slowly.

We opened the machine and confirmed the fan bearing had seized, almost certainly from fine sand particles ingested through the bottom vents during the summer. The MacBook Air Intel has a single fan design with very fine mesh vents that sit low to ground level when the machine is on a table, making it particularly susceptible to sand ingestion in a beach house environment. A seized fan bearing does not always stop the fan completely straight away. In the early stages it causes a grinding or rattling noise and reduced airflow, which leads to the CPU thermal throttling under load before the fan eventually fails entirely.

We replaced the fan with a genuine Apple grade replacement part. We ruled out third party fan replacements immediately for this model because the MacBook Air fan connector is proprietary and third party units have a documented poor fit rate on that generation, often causing the machine to throw a fan error code and run at reduced performance even after installation.
