    Recent Job – Slow iMac

A client on High Street contacted us after their iMac 27 inch 2019 had become painfully slow over the past few months. They were running a small photography business from home and relied on the machine heavily for editing in Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop. Render times had blown out to the point where the machine was barely usable for serious work. On top of that their Wi-Fi kept dropping out, particularly in the study and back bedroom of their apartment.
Our technician visited the same day and ran a full diagnostic on the iMac. Activity Monitor showed the machine was constantly maxing out its 8GB of RAM under Lightroom and spilling heavily into virtual memory on the original 1TB Fusion Drive. A Fusion Drive combines a small SSD cache with a spinning hard drive, and while they perform reasonably well when new they slow down significantly over time as the SSD cache fills up and the system falls back on the spinning drive for most operations. For a machine being used for heavy photo editing this was a serious bottleneck.
The 2019 iMac 27 inch is one of the last models Apple produced with user accessible RAM slots, which was good news. We upgraded the RAM from 8GB to 32GB using a Crucial 32GB DDR4 2666MHz kit. We chose Crucial specifically because they are one of the few RAM manufacturers that certify their kits against Apple's own compatibility list for that iMac model, which eliminates any risk of kernel panics or instability that can come from uncertified third party RAM. We also replaced the Fusion Drive with a Samsung 870 EVO 2TB SSD. We went with the 870 EVO over the cheaper 870 QVO because the EVO uses MLC NAND which delivers far more consistent sustained write performance under the kind of heavy read and write workloads that photo editing software generates. The QVO uses QLC NAND which performs well in short bursts but slows noticeably under sustained writes, not acceptable for a machine being used professionally every day. After both upgrades Lightroom opened in seconds and render times dropped dramatically. The client said it felt like a completely different machine.
