McCrae is a small coastal community on Port Phillip Bay between Dromana and Rosebud, with a mix of permanent residents, retirees and holiday home owners who use the area for summer and long weekend stays.
Computer Technicians has seen a mixture of tech problems in McCrae.
Salt air from the bay is a regular hardware concern, particularly for laptops in holiday properties that sit without climate control over winter. Charging ports, RAM slot contacts and GPU connectors all corrode faster in a coastal environment.
Random shutdowns and unexplained freezes are one of the most common calls from McCrae. It’s often blamed on software when the actual fault is a RAM stick that’s failing or corroded contacts in the memory slot.
4G home broadband and fixed wireless NBN are common out here and router configuration matters for getting reliable performance from either.
Wi-Fi coverage across larger beachside properties with separate outbuildings and alfresco areas is a regular job too.
Whether you’re dealing with a laptop that shuts down randomly with no warning, a MacBook with a corroded charging port after a winter at the beach house or a 4G connection that’s never worked properly, Computer Technicians will troubleshoot your problems and fix it with a minimal amount of fuss.

Recent Job – Dell G3 15 Random Shutdowns Traced to Failing RAM, Jetty Road, McCrae
A client on Jetty Road contacted Computer Technicians because their Dell G3 15 gaming laptop. The crashes had no pattern. Sometimes it ran fine for hours. Other times it crashed within minutes of startup. There was no BSOD, no warning and no error message. The client had already reinstalled Windows with no improvement.
A random shutdown with no BSOD is a hardware fault, not software. When Windows crashes from a driver or software fault it shows a blue screen. An abrupt poweroff with no warning means the fault has bypassed Windows entirely.
We ran CrystalDiskInfo on the drive and checked CPU temperatures under load. Both came back clean.
We then ran Memtest86 from a bootable USB. Memtest86 tests RAM independently of the operating system and it’s the right tool for this job because Windows can’t reliably test the RAM it’s actively using.
It was an issue with the RAM.

Frequently Asked Questions – Computer Repairs McCrae
My laptop keeps shutting down with no error message. What’s causing that?
An abrupt shutdown with no blue screen is almost always a hardware fault. The 3 most common causes are CPU thermal shutdown, a power delivery fault or a failing RAM stick. We diagnose which using Memtest86 for RAM, CrystalDiskInfo for the drive and temperature monitoring under load. Read our post on diagnosing unexpected shutdowns for more detail.
How is a RAM fault different from a software crash?
A software or driver fault causes a BSOD. Windows detects the fault, writes a crash dump and halts with an error code on screen. A RAM fault that causes a hard memory error bypasses Windows entirely. The machine cuts power instantly with no BSOD, no event log entry and no crash dump. Reinstalling Windows won’t fix a failing RAM stick.

My laptop developed faults after sitting at the McCrae holiday house over winter. Could salt air be the cause?
Yes. Salt air oxidation on RAM slot contacts and charging port pins is common in McCrae holiday properties that sit over the damp winter months. It’s the same mechanism that causes the random shutdown pattern in our case study above. Call us for an on-site assessment.
My internet at McCrae is slow or unreliable. Can you help?
Yes. 4G home broadband and fixed wireless NBN in McCrae often underperform because routers are left on factory default settings. We assess signal levels, reconfigure the router and advise on whether a better solution suits your property. Read our overview of NBN alternatives and our guide on why NBN is slow for more context.
