Case Study: Samsung Galaxy Book 2 Pro Repair, St Kilda

A customer contacted us from Fitzroy Street in St Kilda. She had a Samsung Galaxy Book 2 Pro NP930 that had stopped charging about a week earlier. She had tried two different USB-C chargers and neither worked. The battery had eventually drained completely and now the laptop would not turn on at all.

We ran our hardware check when it came in. The battery itself tested within normal range for its age. The charging port looked clean with no visible damage. We put it on a USB-C power meter while connected to a charger and found the laptop was drawing no power at all. The charger was outputting correctly but nothing was getting through.

On the Galaxy Book 2 Pro the USB-C ports handle both data and charging through the same controller on the board. We traced the fault to the USB power delivery controller which had failed. It was not a port replacement job, the port itself was physically fine. The issue was the IC on the board responsible for negotiating the power delivery handshake between the charger and the battery circuit.

This is a repair that requires component level work. We removed the board, replaced the faulty power delivery IC and tested it on the bench before putting the machine back together. Laptop charged normally straight away. We ran it through a full charge cycle and stress test before calling her.

She had been quoted a full motherboard replacement by another repairer. The board itself was completely fine apart from one small component. Replacing the whole board would have been an unnecessary expense and we said so.
