Case Study: Lenovo ThinkBook 14 Gen 3 Repair, Cranbourne
A customer got in touch with us from Sladen Street in Cranbourne. He had a Lenovo ThinkBook 14 Gen 3 that had been knocked around quite a bit over the past year. He used it for work and it went back and forth in a bag every day. The A shell, which is the top lid cover completely dislodged itself from the base of the laptop . It was not just cosmetic.
He had been told by another shop that the whole lid assembly would need to be replaced including the display. That would have been expensive and in our opinion unnecessary.
When we looked at it the screen itself was completely fine. The panel and the cables inside were all undamaged. The only problem was the A shell casing. On the ThinkBook 14 Gen 3 the A shell can be separated from the rest of the lid assembly without disturbing the display or the hinges, which meant we could replace just the outer cover and leave everything else as it was.
We sourced a replacement A shell for that specific model and swapped it over. The hinge alignment needed a small adjustment once the new shell was fitted because the old cracked casing had caused a very slight shift in the hinge mounting position. We corrected that before putting it back together so the lid opened and closed properly with the right amount of resistance.
The customer got the laptop back the same day. He paid for a shell replacement, not a full lid assembly. The other shop’s quote was more than three times what we charged.
Our Repair Process
Every Lenovo laptop that comes in goes through a 24-Point Hardware Integrity Check before the actual repair work starts.
This finds the faults that are not obvious from the outside. A laptop that comes in for a screen replacement might have a thermal issue sitting underneath that will cause a different problem in a few months. We find those things before they become the customer’s next repair bill.
Your data stays on your machine throughout the process and we do not access anything we do not need to. Every repaired laptop goes through a stress test before it leaves our workshop. Major Australian insurance providers use us to prepare damage assessment reports, which gives some indication of the standard we hold ourselves to.
