Case Study: Dell Inspiron 15 3511 Repair, Footscray

A customer called us from Droop Street in Footscray. She had a Dell Inspiron 15 3511 that was about eighteen months old and it had stopped turning on completely. No lights, no fan spin, nothing when she pressed the power button. She had already tried a different charger and it made no difference.

When we got the laptop on the bench the first thing we did was bypass the battery and test the board directly on DC power. The laptop still would not post. That ruled out the battery and the charger straight away and pointed us toward the board itself.

We checked the power rail voltages and found the main system rail was not coming up. Traced it back to a failed MOSFET on the charging circuit. This is actually a known weak point on the 3511 and a few other Inspiron models from that production run. The component itself is inexpensive but finding the fault requires proper diagnostic equipment and someone who knows what they are looking at. A lot of shops would have quoted a full motherboard replacement at this point. We did not need to.

We replaced the faulty MOSFET, reflowed the surrounding area and tested the board on the bench before reassembling. Laptop powered up first try. We ran it through our full stress test before calling the customer and it passed without any issues.

The whole job cost her a fraction of what a new motherboard would have. She had been using the laptop for work and had a week of files she thought she had lost. Everything was fine.

    Our Repair Process

Every Dell laptop that comes in goes through a 24-Point Hardware Integrity Check before we start on the actual repair.

This picks up faults that sit underneath the obvious problem. We have had plenty of jobs come in where the screen is the thing the customer noticed but the real issue was something else entirely causing it. Skipping the diagnostic step is how laptops end up back on the bench two weeks later with a different fault.

Your data stays on the machine throughout the process and we do not go through anything we do not need to access. When the repair is finished the laptop goes through a stress test before it leaves us. Major Australian insurance providers use us to prepare damage assessment reports, which gives some indication of the level of work we do.
