Recent Job – Windows 11 Compatible PC Build & Data Migration, Station Street, Seaford

A client on Station Street contacted us after discovering their desktop PC could not be upgraded to Windows 11.

The machine was a mid-range HP desktop that had been purchased in 2016 running an Intel Core i5-6500 processor on a 100 series chipset motherboard. Microsoft’s Windows 11 hardware requirements include TPM 2.0 and a CPU from Intel’s 8th generation or later, both of which the client’s machine did not meet. They had been running the machine for over eight years and had a substantial amount of personal data, family photos spanning nearly a decade, tax documents, personal documents and browser bookmarks that they wanted transferred across to whatever replaced it.

We recommended and built a new desktop around an Intel Core i3-12100 processor (client had a strict budget so we didn’t go down the Ultra processor line). We chose the i3-12100 over alternatives like the AMD Ryzen 3 4100 and the Intel Core i5-12400 for this specific use case and budget for clear reasons. The Intel Core i3-12100 is a 12th generation Intel processor that natively meets all Windows 11 hardware requirements including TPM 2.0 support through Intel Platform Trust Technology, which is integrated into the 12th generation chipset and requires no discrete TPM module.

We paired the i3-12100 with an MSI PRO B660M-A DDR4 motherboard. We chose a B660 board rather than an H610 board for a specific reason. H610 boards limit memory to two slots and have fewer PCIe expansion options, which constrains future upgradeability. The B660M-A gives four memory slots, multiple PCIe slots for potential future expansion and full TPM 2.0 support through the Intel PTT implementation in the chipset, which is enabled automatically and does not require any BIOS configuration from the client.

For RAM, we installed 16GB of Kingston Fury Beast DDR4 3200MHz in a dual channel configuration.

We installed a Crucial P3 500GB NVMe SSD as the primary boot and data drive, migrated all data from the old HP desktop, connecting the original drive externally and copying all personal folders, family photos, tax documents and personal files across to the new machine. We also exported and imported the client’s browser bookmarks from Chrome to the new installation and configured their email account in the Windows Mail app.

The client was struck by how quiet the new machine was compared to the old HP, which had been noticeably loud from its ageing fans. Windows 11 booted in under ten seconds.
