Looking for computer repairs in Balnarring? Computer Technicians is here to help. Founded in 2016 and Aussie owned and operated, our hand-picked team of qualified computer engineers are extensively trained in all PC, Mac, laptop and desktop repairs and upgrades. We provide fast, same-day service to your home or business.

Balnarring is a semi-rural coastal community on the Mornington Peninsula with a mix of permanent residents, hobby farmers and holiday home owners, and the local environment creates hardware challenges that are genuinely different to what we see in suburban Melbourne. Salt air from Westernport Bay accelerates oxidation on motherboard traces, RAM slot contacts and PCIe connectors, particularly in properties close to the water or those left unoccupied for extended periods without climate control. We also deal regularly with NBN fixed wireless reliability issues out here, which behave differently to standard FTTN or fibre connections and require a different diagnostic approach than most generic IT providers understand. Large rural and semi-rural properties with outbuildings, horse facilities and home offices spread across a big block are another common job, with a single router completely unable to cover the property and clients working off a barely usable signal in their home office or studio. Whether you’re dealing with a MacBook Pro that won’t boot after sitting in a beach house over winter, a Dell desktop with intermittent RAM errors from oxidised slot contacts or a fixed wireless NBN connection that becomes unreliable every time the wind picks up, we will troubleshoot your problems and fix it with a minimal amount of fuss.

Recent Job – MacBook Pro Boot Failure & Whole Property Mesh Install, Balnarring Road, Balnarring

A client on Balnarring Road contacted us after their MacBook Pro 15 inch 2017 Intel failed to boot following a long period sitting unused in their holiday property. The machine had been left in the property for approximately four months over autumn and winter with no climate control running. On powering it up the client was greeted with a grey screen and a prohibitory symbol, which on an Intel MacBook indicates the machine can find the drive but cannot read a valid bootable operating system from it. macbook pro failing to boot

Our technician visited the same day. A prohibitory symbol on an Intel MacBook after extended storage in a coastal environment points toward one of three causes: corruption of the macOS system files, a failing SSD or in some cases oxidation on the SSD ribbon connector causing intermittent read errors that prevent the system from loading. We booted the machine into macOS Recovery using the keyboard shortcut and ran Disk Utility First Aid on the drive. First Aid returned multiple errors on the APFS volume and was unable to repair them, which ruled out a simple file system corruption fix.

We ran a full storage diagnostic from Recovery mode. The SSD itself was healthy with no hardware errors, which ruled out a failing drive. The issue was a corrupted APFS volume that had developed during the extended idle period, likely from a combination of the battery partially discharging and the machine shutting down uncleanly at some point during storage. The SSD was readable and all the client’s data was fully intact and accessible, it simply could not boot from the corrupted volume.

We backed up all the client’s data to a WD My Passport 2TB portable drive before doing anything else. We chose the WD My Passport over a cheaper generic drive because WD’s reliability record on portable drives is strong and the client needed something robust enough for regular travel between their permanent residence and the holiday property. We then performed a clean macOS Ventura installation on the drive, restored the client’s data from the backup and ran the machine through a full diagnostic to confirm stability. Machine booted cleanly on the first attempt with everything intact.

While on site the client also raised a separate issue that had been frustrating them for the entire time they had owned the property. Their home office at the rear of the property was getting almost no Wi-Fi signal from the NBN modem at the front of the house. The property was a large single storey rural home on a generous block with a long internal floorplan and a separate studio workshop at the rear. The existing Telstra supplied modem router was completely inadequate for the size of the property.

We assessed the layout and recommended a three node Netgear Orbi RBK863S mesh system. We chose the Orbi RBK863S over the TP-Link Deco XE75 and the Eero Pro 6E for this specific property for clear reasons. Rural properties on large blocks with separate outbuildings benefit significantly from the Orbi’s dedicated tri-band backhaul channel, which keeps the Wi-Fi bands available for client devices even when nodes are spread across long distances. The Eero Pro 6E performs very well in dense environments with lots of interference but the Balnarring area has relatively low Wi-Fi network density, meaning the 6GHz interference advantage of the Eero matters less here than the Orbi’s superior range and backhaul performance across a large open property. The TP-Link Deco XE75 was also considered but the Orbi outperforms it consistently on large rural properties in our experience. We placed one node at the NBN modem near the front entrance, one in the main living area and one in the rear studio workshop. Full signal coverage throughout the entire property including the workshop within the hour. Client was delighted to finally have a working home office after years of putting up with an unusable connection at the back of the property.

Frequently Asked Questions – Computer Repairs Balnarring

Why does my laptop or desktop fail after sitting in my Balnarring property over winter?

Properties on the Mornington Peninsula that are left unoccupied for extended periods expose hardware to salt air, humidity and temperature fluctuations without climate control to stabilise the environment. This causes oxidation on motherboard contacts and RAM slots, APFS and NTFS volume corruption from unclean shutdowns when batteries discharge completely and in some cases capacitor damage on older desktop builds. We recommend leaving a dehumidifier running in any room where computers are stored in coastal properties during extended idle periods.

My Mac is showing a prohibitory symbol on startup. What does that mean?

A prohibitory symbol means your Mac can find the drive but cannot read a valid bootable system from it. This is almost always either APFS volume corruption or a corrupted macOS installation rather than a completely failed drive, which means your data is usually recoverable. Call us before assuming the worst. Read our guide on whether it is worth repairing your Mac for more context on repair versus replacement decisions.

Do you come out to Balnarring the same day?

Yes, in most cases we can be at your home or property the same day. Call us on 0484 357 559 or hit the book now button and one of our technicians will get back to you quickly.

Can you set up Wi-Fi that covers my whole Balnarring property including outbuildings?

Yes, large rural properties with separate outbuildings, studios and home offices spread across a big block are one of the most common Wi-Fi jobs we do on the Mornington Peninsula. We assess your property layout and install the right mesh Wi-Fi system to give you reliable full coverage throughout. Read our post on NBN and Wi-Fi options for granny flats and outbuildings for more detail.

My NBN fixed wireless is unreliable. Is that fixable?

Fixed wireless NBN reliability issues are almost always related to antenna alignment, signal levels or an ageing modem rather than the NBN network itself. We can assess your fixed wireless setup, check signal levels and recommend the right solution. We also cover NBN alternatives for properties where fixed wireless performance is consistently poor regardless of the setup.

Do you work on both Windows and Mac in Balnarring?

Yes, we work on both Windows computers and Apple Macs including MacBooks, iMacs and Mac Minis. We handle everything from data recovery and oxidation cleaning to SSD and RAM upgrades and full system reinstalls.

What warranty do you provide on repairs?

We back all our work with a 12-month workmanship guarantee, well above the three month standard most repair shops offer. If we can’t find a solution, you don’t pay a cent.

Do you service surrounding areas as well as Balnarring?

Yes, we also service Shoreham, Merricks, Red Hill and Bittern. Feel free to pass our name on to your neighbours, workmates and sports groups.
