Recent fix: ASUS TUF Gaming A15 Repair, Hawthorn

A customer contacted us from Burwood Road in Hawthorn. He had an ASUS TUF Gaming A15 (FA506), about two and a half years old, and it was shutting itself down mid-game every time. Sometimes it would make it twenty minutes. Sometimes five. He had already tried reinstalling Windows thinking it was a software issue. It wasn’t.

When the laptop came in we ran our hardware check first before touching anything else. Temperatures were spiking past 97 degrees Celsius on the CPU within a few minutes of load. The GPU was not far behind. The fans were spinning but the airflow was almost completely blocked. Dust had packed into the heatsink fins so tightly it was basically acting as insulation.

We stripped the cooling system down completely. The thermal paste on both the CPU and GPU had dried out and was no longer making proper contact with the heatsink. On the A15 specifically the heatpipe layout is a bit more compact than most laptops which means heat has less room to move around and paste degradation hits harder and faster than it does on a bigger machine.

We cleaned out the heatsink, replaced the thermal paste on both chips and replaced one of the fan assemblies which had a bearing that was starting to go. We did not just clean and reassemble. We ran a full stress test for 45 minutes to confirm temperatures were sitting where they should before we called it done. CPU was sitting at 78 degrees under full load when it left us. That is where it should have been all along.

The customer had been about two weeks away from buying a replacement laptop. He did not need to.
